The second day of our workshop in Pretoria

The goal of our annual regional workshops on food loss and waste is to bring together different stakeholder groups, facilitate concrete knowledge sharing on pressing issues, and initiate long-term collaborations. By doing so, we aim to make an active contribution to achieving SDG 12.3.

The second day of our workshop in Pretoria focused on losses at the beginning of the value chain, took a closer look at the specific challenges related to animal products, and explored available experiences in urban settings. The discussions were deepened in the break-out sessions, which delved into the practical implementation of mobilizing stakeholders, implementing strategies, considering gender roles and social equity in rural areas, utilizing abattoir blood, and valorising food waste in agriculture. The visit to the poster exhibition and the exhibition stands during the breaks allowed participants to engage in further bilateral discussions. Thematically, the exhibition complemented our workshop with potential approaches to circular economy, business models, and landless food production.

The results of our workshop will be published in a summary on the website of the Collaboration Initiative Food Loss and Waste around mid-November (see here). By doing so, we also want to provide access to helpful information and contacts with the presenters and exhibitors to those who were unable to attend this time. Our workshop will conclude on a high note with an excursion on Wednesday.
