The excursion yesterday concluded our AgriDENZ-funded Regional Workshop on Food Loss and Waste in Sub-Saharan Africa. With mostly dry weather, we were able to visit Urban Aquaponics in Gerhardsville. Owner Neil explained to us the sophisticated system, which, with optimized energy and water requirements, produces an impressive yield of various greens and trout.

Here, training sessions are also conducted for interested individuals and awareness-raising activities are carried out with schools. This way, young people can already learn about opportunities for producing healthy, regional food with minimal resource input and waste. Our participants from 17 different countries exchanged ideas with the staff about legal frameworks, research work on the topic, and potential collaborations. The excursion was a perfect conclusion to our workshop, providing a great insight into decentralized food production. We would like to extend our gratitude to our colleagues from the ARC, especially Mary-Jane Thaela-Chimuka, for allowing us to visit their partner organization! We would also like to thank Urban Aquaponics for hosting us and their patience with all our questions!

With that, our workshop has come to an end after three days. We are thrilled to have been able to support the establishment of a network for young scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa as part of the workshop. A big thank you to all our supporting partners, especially from Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The results of the workshop will be published on our website around mid-November (https://lnkd.in/d9UYFJss).
